Default who's telling me porkie pies ?

guess who broke one of the remotes ?
well actually the blade end and the transponder
no great problem except cost it seems , so I bought a new flip end with uncut blade and new ID48 transponder , phoned the audi agent who said ....sorry , we have to send to germany for a new cut key , they send it here and we recode all of your keys including the old one , we can't code a transponder that has been used on another vehicle but can recode the original for yours [ I think ! } .... didn't ask how much ...just swallowed

on the other hand I am told here that you can go to a suitably equipped locksmith and he can clone your existing key [ does he need to see the car ? ]

or am I missing something

as an addendum I am not clear about seat settings etc according to which remote you use ....how does the system know which remote you have used ....don't they all send out the same signal ?

ah , the wonders of modern vehicles ...hang about , this one is 15 years old !!!!

Do you want the new blade cutting, is that the issue? Surely you can swap the internals...

Lots of key cutting places will do it, some need their arms twisting however...

broken transponder , so as I said will need coding
as you suggest , just cutting should be achievable but afraid that won't do !

Ok. Oh dear. (Apologies, I'm recovering after a heavy night out). Hang fire, someone on here much more knowledgeable than me will surely be along soon.

There's some info on Ross-Tech about how to do it with VCDS if you have a BRAND NEW transponder to add. Needs a PIN for the system though....
Don't think it works with any used/secondhand one.

Seat memory knows (if you enable it) which key unlocks the car. A clone will be a clone so not separate........

Cloning will not work because of variable code Audis after 1996, cloning can only be done for older fixed code keys. There is key ID and variable code. If you clone the key first time either key original or clone will work, after using one of the keys variable code will change for that key ID but the key that was not used will not know new code so will try to use previous code and will not work. Other keys with their own ID will have their own variable code which will only change when that key is used.

When I asked Audi couple of yeas ago, they said they will supply new key, I need to go to locksmith and get it cut myself then come back and they will get it coded but it was too expensive so I did not get it done. I don't think most dealers will code bare transponder. Try different dealer, auto locksmith or independent specialist.

That's remote control part not immobilizer part that opens doors and is used for memory.

ok , maybe I've used the wrong word in cloning

if I go along to a locksmith who does car keys can he not only cut the blank key but code the new ID48 transponder so that it disactivates the immobiliser ....just from the working key I take with me ?

if I understand correctly , if you lose your car key you can send for a specialist locksmith who will get you going ...wonder how that is done !

No, as Ainars explained above. Rolling codes for each key will stop that.

This is my experience.

My car is an 1998 S8. I wanted another key as the 2 I had were looking like death warmed up.
So on advice I contacted Craig at http://www.autosolutions-autolocksmiths.co.uk/

And I booked him in to come visit my car. Couldn't have met a nicer guy. Sad thing is he said he was unable to programme a new key for my car as he didn't have the software, despite trying all things.
Being one who never gives up on something I bought a key from him as he had already cut it before finding out that it wouldn't work.
I was able to programme the central locking function very easily from information from Ross-Tech.
I then spoke to my local Audi to see if they could and yes they could do the immob easily but for all the money ever earned, so that was a no.
The immobiliser proved more troublesome, so I took the new key to bits and removed the transponder chip itself from within. To see how easy it was.
I then disassembled my worst key (which started the car but remote buttons were dead) and removed the immob chip and inserted it into the new key.

and it worked beautifully, so I have a nice Bentley style key with all working functions as if it left the factory

thanks all , getting clearer
it's the usual answer , a definite maybe

bearing in mind SOME locksmiths can come along and get you going when you have lost your keys it is obvious that not only audi dealers can do this , but it is equally obvious that this can only be done by reprogramming the ECU which is what audi do

so my idea of just taking a working key to a locksmith is a no no as pointed out

of course some lucky people may have the PIN which changes everything , yes I know it CAN be extracted but convulted isn't the word

so it looks like get the keys cut and off to a different audi dealer who WILL code the ECU to the transponders , if budget allows [ I'll be sitting down when I read this thread 89 , who much did you get quoted ? ]

or if that isn't possible , as baldrick so wisely says , I have a cunning plan ......flip key cut , plain flat key cut , extract transponder from working flip key , put in plain flat key , conceal inside car , use remotes only for access ; yes , I know some have glued the transponder to ignition barrel but it's not for me !
