Default Wanted: D3 towbar

As title, don't fancy spending a fortune for the occasional use. But, would really like to have the functionality of a detachable towbar. For a 2008 TDi, if that makes any difference. I've emailed our sponsors.

All the best. John.

Ok, I knew it was worth a shot, but a long shot. Used towbars for the D3 are like rocking horse sh#t.

Hi Delboy, thanks for the link. I've seen these, and thought best to avoid as not OEM... Given the complexity of the suspension on the D3, is that not the case?

Well I can't think of a reason for not fitting it, I believe what you're maybe worried about is a trailer module that tells the rear parking sensors to behave, possibly change the characteristics of the Stability control and or ABS.

As for physically towing a trailer etc then I think the above link should be fine, if you get a trailer module and fit that also then great.

But personally having towed various things behind cars/vans without any ABS or traction control etc and still here to talk about it I would guess if you drive appropriately, with a sensible load thats balanced correctly it ought to be fine.

As for the suspension I would also assume it will adjust to suit, by levelling the car, also there is the setting in car suspension within the mmi.

Of course all of the above is my ramblings and may be completely wrong, and if someone knows differently I look forward to learning about it too.

Food for thought indeed Del.

I'm aware of the mechanical side of the install, what now concerns me is mucking about with the electrics, without a plug and play loom.

Not sure how much intelligence is in the towing module, but the car will keep the suspension out of dynamic from memory, and it lets you see that the indicator is working, etc.

A pukka D3 wiring kit will likely cost as much as the towbar again.

But the beauty is that's is all done over Canbus.

I fitted a towbar to the Q7 in a little over an hour.

4 wires only. +12, ground, canbus high and low. That's it. Everything is digital to the towbar module, and it tells the car when a trailer is attached, and the car tells it what lights to do when.

When the car is aware of a trailer, the suspension will lock out so it doesn't go down any further and risk grounding the trailer - You can still do this manually however if you get a cheaper kit.

I would worry about cheaper kits trying to piggy back lighting connections however, especially as the D3 is LED, you might get spurious bulb failures.

Personally, I would hold out for OEM. It will be a very easy fit, it will look and perform better and will be worth money when you're done with it

Annoyingly, the A8 I just sold had one on...... Doh.

If you want the full functionality of the original kit then a quick look through ebay for 4E0907383 brings up plenty of units for sensible money, the final revision for these units is letter J but that very recent.

Plugs and wiring should be easy enough if your that way inclined.

If you need part numbers for plugs etc then just ask

Thanks for all the help chaps, Del especially. I really want the wiring side of things to be proper, the mechanics of the fitment doesn't trouble me overly, but ideally I want plug and play wiring, cos that's my personal area of weakness/needed development (ha).

A retrofit of the OEM kit would be ideal, but if not available a decent aftermarket kit with correct wiring/harness (used to keep costs down) would be a close second best....

Thanks again, John.
