Default severe vibration on steering

a couple of days ago I was driving home when I started to get a severe vibration on the steering .....I presumed that I had lost a weight or otherwise got a wheel out of balance

today I used the car again and ....nothing ! no vibration !

scratched head , which achieved nothing except even less hair

after a while I had reason to use a firm [ not hard ] application of the brakes and ...some vibration again , not so severe this time

when I changed the AR bar drop links recently I had a good look at the brakes , about a quarter worn ; front discs were changed about 20k ago , some wear but not severe ...a bit of brake judder

still scratching head !

must be a logical explanation , but what is it ?
