Hi There,
I've been tempted with a new 8 for a while....I loved my 2000 FL D2 S8 and did over 100k in 4yrs in her on mainly LPG. Alas the engine died, timing went slightly out and threw valves into pistons and at 235k wasn't worth doing much with. Still sat at work in the yard taunting me! I then got a '98 PF S8 which despite being round 100k on the clock with gearbox services died within a few thousand miles of ownership, which was most irksome. This due to low funds, a few other bits lead me into a few other cars and such.... However i've got a bit to play with and am tempted to jump back, but the market is quite bewildering.... S8 here close by (and i've read about it on here) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121851819039 Not sure about the ehaust. Touch lower spec than my old one (heated rear seats, glass sunroof, alacantra) though has a steering wheel controls for the stereo!!! But for ~5k budget a D3 is in reasonable grasp. There's a 4.2 LPG one here http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...s=60&logcode=p Downsides seems to be LWB....Has the sports seats I like though. 6.4 secs 0-60 so beats a D2 S8 technically. and 20K less on the clock Alternatively I sit back and wait as I have been doing and see if/when something could knock me off my perch.....The 4.2 TDI looks interesting, but costs a few K more and for that price i'd really like B&O, but then you're almost at a D3 S8 (lush, but killer economy and i don't think they'd LPG) *ARGHHH* |

Oh!!!
Are there 3 types of seats then Architex_mA8tey ??? I'm a bit D2 educated, where the sports have the side bolsters and the standard/comfort have stripes that go along the legs mattylondon - That's one of the S8's i've seen that are cheapish, love the interior and the B&O.....Not sure about the fuel consumption though and I don't think the 5.2FSI can be LPG'd ??? IT - It says LWB in the add, being debadged I assumed it was. That's one of the reasons i've not gone and looked at it before Christmas!!!
Also had the 4 zone climate control, which added to the idea that it probably was LWB. How else do you tell without a tape measure? Lee |

I think lot of folk are used to much smaller cars, and when they see the rear leg room 'assume' its a LWB.
You can tell instantly its not a LWB, as (a) the side profile shows the rear doors to be shorter than the front, but more obvious still is the absence of the upper door cubby in the rear, as seen open in this bonafide LWB here: Happy shopping ![]()

you can tell by looking at the rear door cards if its a LWB then they are longer and have an additional pop out pocket to the front of the door card
EDIT - Damn you IT you beat me to it LOL!!

Ah....I'd noticed those door cubby holes on another pic of a D3 and just thought that they were a cool addition or add on, rather than an Indicator of the LWB model. Surprising what you can find out from pics.
I'm good on D2 photo feature spotting and aging (buttons above stereo, gearbox layout, headlamp washers, front arm rests etc) |

And I just got back from looking at that D3 in Bedford. Bit of an odd set-up. Some people running from a yard at the back of some shops. Turned up on spec and had to wait half an hour and then they had to get the car out from in a load of vehicles.
looks in reasonably good condition and a fairly high spec of which I have a photograph of a build sticker to decipher. It's a blue/silver which is nice. The black roof is kinda cool and has a glass sunroof like my s8 did. The wheels have been refurbed at some point and are black but work quite well. Interior is good, though there's the odd switch that shows a little white at the edges but probably wouldn't be too hard to swap. Don't know what the little pop out tray thing is on the dash, to the left of the parking sensor switch, seemed to have a velour insert? The LPG system looks a very clean install. The injector work in the engine bay and wheel well tank look good. There's a hidden small port in the fuel flap, which needs an adaptor! Oddly the LPG button is in the glove compartment, but it's a switch with a plug rather than hard wired, so could easily be moved. Switching over there was a little rumble to the engine and the check engine light came on. They said that the light was normal and it did occur on my S8, but i'm not sure as i got rid of it with an exhaust sensor iirc. The drivers door has dropped and there was a traction control sybol on and a headlight dip/bulb out warning, which on inspection is due to an LED fitted in the left headlight. They said they would sort these before sale, though wondered if the traction symbol was an ABS sensor due to the wheel refurb? In checking other stuff I noticed that the aircon dials for the drivers side came up with passenger settings and vica versa. Am guessing it's a vagcom setting as I think the car has been out the country at some point from the paperwork (Polish LPG system i think)? It's a nice car, fair bit of poke and handles well, though the sport makes a lot more difference than kick down seemed to. Not quite the scare the passenger difference that my S8 did though, more civilised. Certainly a lot more interested in a D3 now than I was!!! |
