My car, A2 D2 4.2 40v, is suddenly shutting off the engine, notably after being in slow moving traffic conditions. On one occasion, scanning showed an Immobiliser error which I didn't make a note of unfortunately and hasn't reared it's head since.
When scanning:Code 00849 - 031 KWP1281 * DTC definitions not found. Please refer to vehicle service manual! This code appears after each shut-down event, but it doesn't explain what it is. ![]() When the car was recovered home (I had a disabled passenger with me), the recovery driver said he thought the car smelt hot, although I didn't notice that. Car will restart after a few minutes of enforced inactivity, but I really need to get this sorted ASAP as I have become a mobile roadblock when in traffic! Temp gauge needle never goes above 90! Hoping you guys/gals will be able to point me in a clear direction... Cheers, DailyMike.

Ignition switch contacts implausible - some are on and some are not when they should all be the same. Given that you mentioned you're starting it with a screwdriver, that seems entirely plausible.
I'd probably look at changing the whole ignition switch assembly - this bit: That requires dismantling the cowling, which you've probably already done, removing the steering wheel, clock spring and column stalks. Then you have to grind these two shear bolts off: Usually I'll cover the interior with some thick cloths / rags / old blanket and cut slots in the bolts with a dremel, then chisel them out. At this point its probably easier to swap the whole chunk than to try and change bits inside it. |

One of the codes I've picked-up on today stated misaligned contacts, so you're spot-on I'll A8 Parts in the morning to see if they've that "chunk" in... Enjoy what's left of the weekend and thanks again! Mike
