Thumbs down Driving an A6 Avant TDi courtesy car today...hmmm

...very disappointed at the poor quality materials inside compared with the D2 A8. MMI very cool, but fiddly to operate (maybe I'd get used to that). Car's a 10 plate with 10k on it, but loads of the trim is scratched already, and looks very fragile. Ride on 18" wheels is no better than my S8 on 20s. And I was expecting loads more space in the back seats, but there isn't.

Does look nice though. I'll still take a test in an RS6 at some point, but not rushing to get one. More modern D3 S8 or W12 next for me. How's the quality compare with the D2s? Might be testing an old supercharged e55 estate soon (sorry...)

If the build quality of the A6 dissapointed you so much then the old E55 would dissapoint you further I'd imagine? I thought the build quality on the A6 is fairly good but it is just about to be put out of production. I tried the new 5 series and it really showed the D2 up so I'm sure the latest A6 should be upto scratch seing as the 5 will be its direct rival. Also, I had a car with MMI for month and you defiantly get used to it. Hope it's nothing serious with your S8?

It's not so much the build quality as the quality of the materials used that's disappointing. Every is so much more solid and 'resolved' in the D2.

Must admit that the main thing drawing me to the e55 is 470bhp and 0-100 in 10... There's a 580bhp DMS tuned one on Pistonheads at the moment...

Mine's in for service. Bought front discs to do it myself (in September!!), but never got round to it, so they're fitting for me - I'll just have to stomach the cost. I'e not been well the last 3 months. Plus the v-belt is a bit cracked. Looks like it wasn't done at cambelt time. Big one on variable interval, so wallet will take a bashing.

Been told there's small oil leaks on both offside diff seals. Not heard of this before. It's certainly not leaking on my drive...

Maybe I'll just keep it, and go RNS-E...

Ah, I see what you mean. I think that's down to materials having to be more recyclable (is that even a word) nowadays. I bet the old E55 is a stormer. What are they going for nowadays? I don't think I ever could. The switchgear etc on that feel very cheap, then again Reffro has a Merc around the same
age and seems to enjoy it. I'd personally be looking at an E39 M5/C5 RS 6
Let us know how you get on and I hope the bill from Audi isn't too high.

I used to have an E55 saloon, it was like a rocket powered armchair lol
I don't remember thinking the interior quality was awful but then things have improved on most cars since then, it was definitely a great Q car!

Zip you're welcome to have a play around in my D3. I reckon the D2 was very well put together and with first class materials, but they have deffo gone better on the D3 with quality leather everywhere and I personally love the carbon inserts and LED lights inside the doors and everywhere, plus LED puddle lights in the bottom of the door mirrors. They illuminate where you're standing when you get in. Very useful in the pitch dark mud hole called a car park where I work
