Default OK Guys, I Did It!

Some of you may have heard (or even delivered) the jibes about my 'cautious' driving. They're usually along the lines that, because I started my '8 experience with a 2.8, and I now have an S8, that I haven't appreciated the difference!

So, I asked my wife for a professional performance car driving lesson at Scotland's only professional race track - in my own car - for my birthday present. What a great experience!

After the initial trepidation, I gradually gained the confidence to throw the car around a bit - and it didn't even twitch (well, maybe once or twice). I even passed a Ferrari 360 and had to slow down on the hairpin for an E-type Jag!

So, next meet, I hope you all won't be either stuck behind me or waiting for me.

These cars are amazing!

Must have been an ace laugh. How did it fair through Duffis?
I had a 1998 380 bhp Impreza Type R and used to hoon about there with the SIDC track days. Fantastic fun for one and all.

Glad you enjoyed that Jim.

I did Knockhill on an Awayday with one of the Oil Companies many years ago.

We had a wee classroom session safety talk first where we were promised to be taken round in the Cosworth with 550bhp - after lunch when the track had fully dried out.

We then got taken 3 at a time round in one of the MGs - they were sponsored somehow by them.

I though this will be a bit tame as it's only a saloon car. The driver pootled out the pits onto the track then launched the car at the first right hander! I was totally cacking myself thinking 'No way can this get round here', but it did!

He then showed us the right and wrong ways at each corner and you saw that once you were wrong it was easy to stay wrong through a few more corners.

We then got taken out in the little MGs - 'no higher that 3rd gear and if I say stop, you stop or you are out'!

I was right up there with the best of us in lap times in them. Right, time for the single seaters - can't remember what exactly they were but fast and twitchy. I ended up facing the wrong way a couple of times by trying too hard at the esses - seems it's not girlie to brake slightly going in!!

I had a sore chest for days after that with all the steering action as you don't take your hands off, just twist round in each direction.

Anyway, back to the 3 door Cossie. They told us at lunchtime that it had been fired up OK and taken round for a warm up but the bonnet had not been properly fastened down so now it had a caved in screen.

Never mind we still had our run round. Difficult to see out the smashed laminated screen but the driver still frightened me to death!

That was maybe 20 years ago but what a brilliant day
