Go to the '3' shop and get a MiFi for 20 quid a month with a 15Gb allowance.. It'll charge off a ligher socket and away you go.

Regardless of install this will be network dependant on quality of connection and level of coverage wherever you are.

That is a good option, I have one and do use it on the move though it can be flaky out in the sticks - but can't they all. It does maintain its connection pretty well on major routes though but don't expect true wired broadband speeds.

With the MiFi the one problem I have with mine is that they can get hot if being used and charging at the same time and shut down. It is one of the early Mi-Fis though and they may have improved on them since.

I just take the back off of it to let the heat dissipate

Depending on your model are there not reception problems inside the vehicle?

I know with my "double glazed" S8 phone reception for my passengers is generally rubbish, so I still maintain (with a separate PAYG sim card) the integrated ancient Nokia 3110 phone so that family can get in touch if necessary while on the move.

An integrated system with an external aerial will work better, especially in marginal areas, and of course provide a professional "business class" service. Whether it's cost-effective or not is another question.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Yeah.. but it's got the same issues, and if Guy goes over his bandwidth, then his phone's affected

I think most MiFis have a socket for external aerial, though I may be wrong You could site it in the boot as the WiFi signal will reach it OK there.

just got one of them there MiFi thingys today, after limited testing does seem to be pretty good and I am based about 15 miles north of Glasgow, gone for a 1gb deal at just over £10 monthly to start, no cost for device, just flung it into the storage area under the arm rest and Bob was indeed my Mum's brother, with a very good signal, and it also seems to charge from the USB socket on my Connects2 MP3 adapter in the glove box and still works OK from there too, still to test on the move yet, and will report back on how that goes, guess the big test will be at the annual meet as the Lakes are not renowned for mobile reception, ohh and dont think they have a socket for external aerial, but dont see any reason why they wont work from the boot if a power source was available in there for when the battery runs low

I finally treated myself to an ipad 3 a few weeks back. Very pleased, great screen etc, and the deal from 'Three' at the moment is great - £229 for the unit, then £25 a month for 24 months - but includes 15Gb of data.

Share that out as a personal hot spot, and you have the mifi functionality too, albeit far more expensive.

Where I'm going with this, is that the iPad also makes the best Sat Nav I've seen in my life. Its huge. Run Nav free on that and its a joy.

Then it'll happily run iplayer, play movies, music etc. Its virtually the perfect 'auto pc' (remember them?)

If I could find a way of mounting it in the car (and securing it) it would make a fantasticly useful piece of kit.

They'd work really well hung off the front headrests for rear passengers to provide movies etc in Guys line of work....
