Default Rear roof interior bulbs

Discovered now that its dark when I leave work, that the interior centre light in the back is not working. The on / off switch does not do anything either, so looks like the bulb has gone. I know it does work, as it did earlier in the year, and the reading lights are working fine.

Can someone link me to a suitable bulb and advise how to get to it. I assume, possibly that the whole assembly is removed from the roof to get access.

Unlikely to be the bulb - all Audis of this vintage do it - both the A6 and S8 are similarly afflicted. A light thump in the area of the unit, or rocking of the switch back and forward will usually get it working for a while.

Was going to post a similar query as to whether anyone had an effective long term solution as I'm sure I've previously cleaned the contacts on the A6 with no effect....

Tried the light thump and rocking the switch this morning and nothing at all.

Removing & Installing rear light is HERE
and rear reading light is HERE

It can only be either
- Blown Bulbs - there are 2 x festoon type
- Switch disconnected from the back connector
- fuse blown
- fault in the wiring between the light fitting and the fusebox

Thanks Neil.

The switch illumination works, as do the side reading lights its just the main centre one thats dead. Hope its something easy, otherwise it will get forgotten about till next year as I still need to get the suspension arms sorted.

Had a quick look at it today, not sure where the fault lies. Removed the light cover and the 2 bulbs are present, and at first glance appear to have intact filaments although I dont have a meter here to test them. Removed and reseated the electrical connection, still the same and not working. Will test the bulbs with a meter in a few weeks.

Bulbs checked with a multimeter and all good, so looks like the issue is with the switch. Guess if I want to fix it, it will be an A8parts job in the future.

I've been experimenting with mine on both my cars and the symptoms with both are identical.

If I open the doors, the rear lights will not come on.

Switching the rear lights from 'doors open' to 'on' makes no difference - still don't light

If I turn the map lights on, they light.

If I turn the front lights from 'doors open' setting to 'on' then the front AND rear light unit comes on, indicating there is at least power getting to the rear light unit - be interested if yours follows the same behaviour?

My '04 A6 does exactly the same - I suspect it's a weakness in the wiring design, but can only think there's either a poor 12V connection to 1 pin, or something internal to the light unit that's failed? Not knowing the ins and outs of how they're wired up I'm not sure which is more likely.

I suspect the only way to definitively address is a brand new light unit - I'm off to look at the price on Etka......

Hmmm - £79 for a new one, so that ain't happening in a hurry. Bit more testing required before I accept the unit itself as the only possible cause

Adrian,

Just been out and had a play myself, and its exactly as you describe above. When I operate the front switch to the on position, all the lights come on including the centre one in the back.
