Default 5.0 V10 TDI engine - amazing!

I didn't realise that the VW V10 TDI engine has gear driven camshafts. Amazing engineering. Shame the engine is so heavy, I read somewhere it is 367kg.

That's what my dad has and the engine is amazing.
No chains or belts. It's all cogs.
It's so smooth and effortless to drive.
I got caught out a couple of times pulling on to a 'private road', I left my foot down building speed and only realised I was over hundred when the dash informed me it's dropping the suspension due to the speed I was going.
It's also the engine that fith gear used to tow 747.
Google that video, it's brilliant.

Though with a Shark map.. That 5.0 goes to 660 lbft!

Its a shame to hear that. A well implemented gear drive can be extremely reliable, for example in the Toyota Landcruiser, their 4.2 V6 diesel.

That's surprising.
You'd think engineers would have figured out how to make cams and gears that were robust enough to last as long as, say an engine or a gearbox.

You shouldn't have told her.

I replaced my XC90 with a basic A8 SE 3.0 TDI. Much happier.. The suspension lifts for off-road and it still has four wheel drive.
