Default Ouch, not a good start to the weekend

Just had a call from Mackies in Glasgow (the ZF gerarbox specialists).

My car's in for a gearbox service, replacement output seal and shaft/flange and a look at an oil leak (which A4 Audi keep telling me is nothing to worry about).

The oil leak is from the front diff, and Mackies say it is something to worry about and the the seal needs replacing. To do this, they have to drop the subframe, so it's a pretty big job.

And they gave me the cost before they went ahead... for the whole lot (as above) .... £675!

It's a good job that I:

1. Don't play golf
2. Don't have a mistress
3. Don't smoke
4. Do love the car

Not too bad... Cost me only a little less for my gearbox service alone!

I don't think so. The car was only expected to be in for a day and I can get a lift in and out of work from a colleague who commutes that way.

But the leak from the front diff meant that they needed it for another day, so I'm scrounging lifts to and from Partick station and then taking the train to and from home.

Ouch Jim, but look at this as a one off big job which do some good to your 8, and she will love it.

As PsYcHe said, not far off from a cost of just the service on D3 box, so it's not that bad. 1k would hurt much more

Del, I know what you mean, I did same thing 3 years ago buying some amazing washing machine and I don't love it either, yes it has fancy technology inside, but it doesnt run on petrol, its not 4 wheel drive and for sure its not comfortable when sitting on it.

LOL! My father in law fixes washing machines for a living and always advises that you should buy the simplest machine you can find (avoiding some makes). Let's be honest, who uses more than 2 or 3 programmes and do you really need it to do anything more than wash and spin?

The circuit boards are the usually killer, and the fancier it is the more likely these are to fail.

Who needs WHICH? Just ask my father in law!

Really? Which side? I did my RH (drivers side) seal and was fairly straight forward, just drive shaft out.
