Solution: Hit with your biggest hammer until you feel better and return to MOT station. Initial reading 179 O/S, 11 N/S
![]() Put the new caliper on yesterday and now I only have 2 clicks to engage the handbrake compared to the full extension I was using so the lesson for the day is if your handbrake comes up more than two or three clicks then something is broken somewhere.... Bill

I had the same problem with the S2, in fact both rear calipers were not returning to their stops - solution : 2 new rear calipers, no hammers were used and no calipers were harmed in the process...

Must be an Audi design problem. My 90Quattro suffered from seizing handbrake quadrants - usually noticed at MOT time! As I had the car for *many* years I started to replace them proactively whilst being serviced etc. Result no further problems. In the interim, every time you can get underneath the car, give them both a spray with WD40 or similar.

Strangely when I came to do my brakes last year the rear calipers had already been replaced but they had left old discs in which were a fraction of the cost - seemed like false economy to me for the sake of about 50 quid to do both sides

My rear brakes work properly but If I use the handbrake then the n/s sticks on.
I put took the wheel off and spent a while applying the handbrake and then using a hammer to release it as the return spring could not release the h/b. Even though I splashed a load of WD-40 on it as I worked, it still sticks if applied. Is there more I could do apart from replace the caliper? It's an early FL so it's got the pukka Brembo brakes...not in stock at A8 parts. |

Simon,
All rear brakes are Girling. It is more than likely to be corrosion of the piston which means it wont sink back into the caliper. Stop hitting it with the hammer, disasemble from the carrier and remove the dust seal. If the dust seal has failed Moisture will have got in. The temp repair procedure is here.
