What next?
So, Big Bertha the X5 will shortly be off to her new (temporary) home on a BMW dealer's forecourt.
So what next? I have two or three options: 1. Blow the whole budget on something like a D4 S8, RS6, Merc C63, M3 or similar. 2. Buy something for a grand off ebay with some MOT whilst I wait for the right car from option #1 3. Split my budget to buy a 2nd car for the garage (I'm thinking early 997 911) and then spend the rest on a daily driver - D4 diesel, Golf R, S3, Merc E220. A D2 just won't fit in my small garage, waiting on a certain architect for a solution to that one. Anyone got any good ideas or know of something interesting for sale?

Thanks for the suggestion.
Daily driver needs to be capable of 500 miles per week in comfort and utter reliability, not sure a grand's worth will do that job and I wouldn't take that risk, I'd lose too much income not being able to get to the job. I like the idea of an R8 although I suspect I'll have the same issue with my small garage |

Start with using some of the budget to extend the garage, that will give much more options to you for your next car.

Series 2 TT is a cracker. I recall you had a boxster at some point, and I was blown away by how comfortably, agile and sporty it was. I've never even owned a Quattro version and I'm still sold. Its that good.
C6 S6 is an unsung hero. Munches the miles and sounds superb without the bulk of the 8. Handles, and shifts. Surprises boy races and still can have adaptive cruise and some niceties. Golf R is a nice car, at a lower cost that a seemingly similar S3. A8 D4 is very much a plodder, not a smiles machine imo. It doesn't belong at all in the same sentence as the other pedigrees.... Merc. Er. no. We forgave the BMW. Just, but that's pushing it. Didn't realise you were so close to retirement?

Merc Merc Merc!
Everyone was raving about the 'old' C63. Brilliant set up, huge engine, light weight car around 1730kg, rear wheel drive, springs and shock with only 1 setting, perfectly set up no nonsense about fiddling with settings. Get the one with the Performance Pack and then no worries, its got the SLS buckets and lifters? And upgraded head bolts, should be bomb proof. If I ever save up enough that's what I'm going for. I want a break from Audi engines, their 4 wheel drive and their nose-heaviness. Check out some reviews on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HYdVXmYA-w |

No you wont, C63 is built better than a lot of Audis, don't be fooled
Lots less goes wrong. All new Audis = FSI nightmare for starters. Not quite C63 but still relevant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm_RvrS67VU |

That's an unexpected response on this forum Goran, but I agree with you and with a lot of stuff Chris Harris says.
I have test driven: D4 S8: very comfortable, very rapid, but not a lot of drama or noise C7 RS6: as above really, went to try it as felt S8 too quiet and RS6 was just as quiet, very disappointing in that respect New M4: rapid but lacking in character compared to my old E93 with the V8, noise seemed 'artificial' and interior a bit let down. New C63: tried a coupe and a saloon now, bags of character, naughty noise, interior far superior to the BMW and lots of standard kit with a much shorter options list. Prefer coupe looks but saloon practicality and lower prices may win the day New Mustang: great noise but nowhere near as quick as the above, plus stupid touch screen only infotainment which required far too much dexterity when you're driving and stupid LHD positioned handbrake BMW 140i: bags of fun and noise, interior not so good but loads of car for the money, a definite maybe for a daily driver Possible not driven: New Mercedes E220: still think this would make a great daily Golf R S3 RS3 S4/S5 RS4/5 M5/M6 Maserati Ghibli (petrol) D4 3.0 TDI At the moment I am between IT contracts so no desperate rush to buy a daily driver, so might focus on finding something for the weekend for now, worry about a daily when the next contract comes in. Anybody got any better ideas than a manual 997 911 for about £20-25k? It'll fit in the garage, should be fun and reliable, plus should hopefully retain most of its value at that age/price point. Thought about TVRs but a bit fragile for my taste, might still go for something like a Z4M or Boxster/Cayman. 350/370Z anyone? EDIT: rights reserved to change my mind on any of this and buy a purple M3 with ceramic brakes I've just spotted
