Urbee
So who's going to donate to this then? Very green and politically correct, but would you want one?

I don't get this whole electric / hybrid as being all that good really. It might be just the way my think head works but..... If it's electric it has to have something to store that electric, so batteries.
The heavy metals in batteries has to be mined and that don't happen with some guy and a shovel, it's dirty and not good for the planet. Then you have to charge these batteries, so where does the electric come from? Powerstation, so burning coal or nuclear and we all know that both of those are really good for the planet. Plutonium or Uranium that also needs mining and it's not cheap especially when you got to despose of the waste. Lets all be big enough to say "look you thick t*ats if you're going to build a eco car it can't cause more damage to produce than running a conventional petrol car for 100 years"

Following the logic of all that you need a mobile power source that is easily regenerated/distributed, light and relatively un-polluting in use and recyclable.
So what's wrong with a high energy-density fluid like petrol or ethanol if you can find a way to recycle it? Burning it produces mostly CO2 and H2O. So if a process can be found to extract CO2 from the atmosphere and water from wherever to make either of these it's a win. And no need to create a whole new distribution system.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant. 2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one! Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later) 1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850! |

Also, the high efficiency magnets used in wind turbines contain rare earth metals and the PV solar panels they suggest should be mounted on the garage containing this "car" contain exotic materials and dont come cheap either.

"6. Be simple to understand, build, and repair."
if its a hybrid, thats a fail then just check out the Chevy Volt's innards, most complex car anywhere, requires a million lines of code to control the two electric motors, 3 clutches, and petrol engine. Its got to be all electric, or nothing, but since battery tech isnt there yet, I guess its back to petrol Or just get a Nissan Leaf if you only do city driving, thats all electric, price is falling like a rock, saw one on ebay for £14k. I drove one too, very nice to drive. Tesla Model S is on my list too, 230miles range is just about the lower limit of acceptable. Let me know when they drop to £10k Although I hate the big touch screen and no buttons. My dream electric car would be a D2 S8, either with a motor for each drive shaft (4 motors) no gearboxes, or a motor each driving the 4.111 differentials directly. Plenty of battery space in the prop shaft well. Last edited by Goran; 30th April 2013 at 06:31 PM. |
