Default Gearbox Irregularities?

Yep another gearbag thread

This is going to be a bit of a running thread, as im still going through things, but this is the story so far.

Started banging into gears and then into limp mode. (1997 A8 5sp Auto, 190k) Was then slipping badly. Pulled code 17114 out of it (with my dodgy SuperVAG K Plus)

Dropped the pan, and a small amount of bad fluid came out. new filter and fluid (superVAG also lets you monitor real time Measuring blocks too, very surprised)

Drove it for the first time today and here is what it did;
On flat ground, put your foot down, and it flares to 5500ish rpm and bangs back a gear.
Load it up going up a hill, and doesnt appear to slip at all, ... hesitates a little, but doesnt flare nor bang into gears.
When its not banging gears, it shifts nicely
Driveline feels like it "binds" when turning at very slow speed ... never used to (had a Subaru that did that recently .. sold it)

Will go for a longer drive tomorrow rather than just lapping around the block.

ECU and Transmission have thrown no codes since the box fill.
Channel 1 on Trans Measuring blocks gives me engine rpm and transmission rpm. Appears that the TC is locking up as needed. Although when it flares its sample rate isnt quick enough to read it (and im not always looking at the scan tool as im preparing for an imminent BANG)

Is there a list somewhere for what the different input channels are for the Trans Measuring blocks? .. is there any outputs that I should be looking at or checking?

I really like the car, and if I can work out whats playing up rather than a $853868 rebuild I'd like to. ... it also scares me the same box is in my E38 as well which has 250k on it

Ideas/suggestions to look at?

This is possibly a really dumb suggestion, especially as I have firs hand experience how parts costs can mount up. But I'll throw it out there anyway.

Consider a manual conversion. Its been done even without re-mapping or removing the TCU. If you have easy access to a re-mapper even better.

If you are good at installing mechanicals it should be a fairly cheap install you will save thousands on labour.

The manual gearbox 01E is amazing, Swedes use it for stupid levels of turbo power and torque in the B5 S4, RS4 etc.
It can be got very cheaply, I bought a refurbed 01E 6-speed 4WD box off a Audi A6 for only £200.

The conversion is practically all factory parts. Only issue is the pedal box.
The Right Hand Drive pedal box has enough room for a clutch pedal and even has the pivot shaft long enough so a pedal can be put right on. But the master cylinder won't fit easily needs a different location and therefore a custom shaped clutch pedal. So that's the biggest challenge.
Apart from that the manual box is loads of fun.

Thanks Goran, the thought has been going around my head ever since the 8 went up on stands a week ago, ... but i just cant do it. If ever a luxo car should be manual, the A8 is right up there. Its more nimble and the chassis more responsive than my E38 by miles, ... I just like the laziness of an auto behind a revving 8.

While im hopeless with mechanical works, my business partner is the opposite. I hate working on cars, and he hates dealing with people so it works out well .. if I can diagnose where the issue lies, then we'll drop the box and rebuild it

I understan completely. The A8 D2 auto box is very nice when it works. At first I did miss my auto 8, but once I got over it the manual version is so hilarious I don't think I'll ever sell it. There's easy potential to lose another 50kg off it and get it down to 1700kg with full tank. I can only dream how well it will handle then.

If you ever find someone selling a A8 with a broken auto box for cheap, its worth considering getting a project car.

D2's are pretty rare here in AU

Did some diagnostics before on the way home, firstly all the solenoids appears to be working and tested fine from the Scantool.

Data on TCC is all good, converter appears to be functioning. Stall speed consistent in D and Reverse.

Clunked a bit into D, slips in 2nd and 3rd. Didnt get a chance to load up in 4th ... but I'd say from that data, Clutch Pack A appears to be the culprit
