Default Here's something I just don't get

I've noticed this a few times with the S8 now, although it doesn't really bother me.

Long journey, get home, shut the car down, get out. There's a noise like a motor running around the rear offside wheel/the fuel filler cap. Quite noisily. It runs for maybe 6-8 seconds, then stops, then has another go, maybe four times in total. Suspension isn't moving as far as I can see.

Anyone else experienced this? What is it?

It's the electronic parking brake doing a calibration, I'll bet you didn't apply the hand brake and just got out when you noticed it.

Ahhh! Brilliant insight - I *never* use the electronic parking brake just in case it seizes.

Wonder why it only does it after long (usually "spirited" drives).

It does it as soon as it can every 1000Km if the vehicle is locked without the EPB. IIRC. Probably good exercise for it to wind all the way in and out - work that grease around.

I've wondered WTF that noise is too. Tends to happen when I park on an incline, at the inlaws' house.

When I first got the car I guessed it was the air suspension compressor, but that's behind the front bumper.

I don't tend to use it much either, but make myself in the hope use will prevent it seizing?!

Its quite normal, they even tell you to expect it in the handbook.
If mines doing it, a good press of the brake pedal usually shuts it up.
I'd have thought that not using your handbrake, is a more certain route to it seizing.

Exactly. Mine is on and off several times a day, every day and never had any problems yet. Regular use is the key to keeping things working IMHO.
