Default Tyre life!

Just calculated that the old Michelin tyres on our a6 have done 19,200 miles (pilot sport 2s) when I dropped it off on Saturday for a wheel refurb and fitting of continental sport contact 5s - not bad considering the eagle f1s we had on before only lasted 10k before the tread was minimal!

The current tyres were utterly shot on the inner and outer edges due to lots of town work but still above the 2mm wear markers in the middle

Don't think I've ever kept a car long enough to be sticking a 3rd new set on in our ownership before!

What did you get the contisport 5's for price wise Adrian?
They are excellent tyres in my opinion, hope I can afford them when the 3's wear down on my wheels

Camskill Neil - £102 each plus a small delivery charge. That's in 235 45 17 94Y

Worked out cheaper than mytyres by about £50

Since the wheels are all getting a refurb it didn't matter ordering them online

Had older continentals on our b5 passat so expecting these to be pretty similar to the michelins, hopefully.

Michelin offer a 30k mile tread life warranty on my super sports in most countries, and I believe 25k on PS2s, except they don't in the UK as our roads are so shocking.

Is there a time limit on that as well Amar? Just wondering as can imagine the kind of use we make of cars will have a large impact on tyre life

I'm not sure, Adrian. Don't want to look it up as it will annoy me. I paid £246 each for these tyres and they won't last 30k miles!

Funnily enough I was checking my tyre life today as all 4 will need replacing soon, they're all Michelin's though very slightly different design and age between front and rear.

The newer pair have done just over 25,000 and the others maybe 30,000, but by swapping front to rear I've pretty much evened them out so all 4 will be replaced together.

I'll be putting my winter tyres and wheels on in a few weeks so they'll actually get replaced next spring when I take the winter wheels off.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

How many of you swap to winter wheels ?

Only asking because I've never owned 20's before and I think I'll struggle, I've been considering getting some 17's to swap to and get the 20's refurbed possibly colour changed to gunmetal or something

And how are you going to prove how much mileage have you done?Besides the fact that you can wear them out in one afternoon.

I know some companies offer 10 year warranty against manufacturing defects for summer tyres and 6 years for winter tyres and some throw in free repairs or replacement if cannot be repaired during lifetime. Have not heard anything about mileage warranty an can't imagine how it works. Any tyre will wear out fast if you put it on track, do burnouts, use underinflated, overloaded or if wheel alignment is not right. How are you or manufacturer going to prove mileage? They can be swapped between different cars, odometer replaced or reading changed.

I don't have winter rims to replace my 20s, although have been on the look out. I'm stuck with 18s for winter use due to the Brembo brakes on the later S8 and Avus rims rarely come up at a price I can justify at the moment. I tend to not use the car if the weather is really bad.

Our A6 can be drifted in snow with no issues and is very benign - down here we rarely get enough ice/cold weather to justify having a set of wheels stored for winter use. Having said that I would buy some if I could afford to.
