Default Confused by cubby hole by handbrake.

Looking in the little covered cubbyhole between the front seats, beside the handbrake handle, I found a couple of things that are new on FL vs PF:

1. A menu controller which seems pointless (and weirdly located) and is missing the control knob - any one got a spare one at a fair price?

2. A cupholder which seemed to be missing something, so I lifted it out....

I found a couple of little flaps loose with the cupholder, which "seem" to fit in cutouts on opposite sides, but put in the obvious location they just sort of "flail around".
They appear to provide a mechanism for holding different size cups, but I can't see that working without some sort of spring system.

I can't see any obvious places in the unit to fit any springs, no unoccupied fixing lugs or the like. Can anyone describe how this is supposed to work?

1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I'll try and take a pic of mine - the menu control when pushed in brings up display in the DIS that basically takes a million button presses to inform you when your next service is due! It's the for-runner to MMI.....

Not sure what's missing from your cupholder - they're basically useless for anything bar a standard coke sized can. My insulated coffee cup stands up in the drivers armrest!

Wouldn't want to risk pouring sticky gunge on the interior anyway.

I put a rubber band round the outside and it seems to work OK after "persuading" it back into place.

Just need to find a knob for the menu thingy.....

Yeah, the control is for the vehicle settings menus, clocks, computer, speed warning etc.

The cup holder should have two flaps, to help keep cups/cans from moving around. They are supposed to be spring loaded as you surmised, sounds like yours are in need of some loving attention.

Those knobs always come off.
Audi decided to save some money and purchased a job lot of Binatone knobware that had been gathering dust since the 60,s .
Not their finest hour knobwise

Found a nice small one in my kit of bits that fits perfectly, held securely with a little grub screw so that I can use the "button press" function properly too.

It does, now I've found them and put them back, but they are "flaccid".
Fixed by a rubber band, but can anyone describe or show (pictures) how Audi designed it to work?

I'll dig out my 60's/70's box of electronic bits, must be a few knobs in there.

If they're the same as all the others, they should have been spring loaded.. You'll probably find the fracture points where the old ones broke off.
