Default Time to buy up the PF D2's?

Just a thought really, as I've been reading a few threads that seem to run along the lines that these cars are getting pretty worthless, and dwindling in numbers by the day. Not really worth fixing up when they go wrong and no one wants to own them anyway ect. Now I happen to rate these old barges they were a great car when new, and more than a few of them still look good to this day. So my question is I suppose are these 8's the new generation Triumph Stags or E Type Jags? Can any of you that are old enough remember when these now sought after classics were near worthless junk? Could the PF A8 end up going the same way. Ignored until there are few left then suddenly items of value. Just my ramblings, so what do you think? Time to start saving a few for the future?

I wish I still had my 200 Turbo Avant or even one of the three S2's that I owned, but they are stories for another day. So, what do you think are the prospects for a classic A8 PF in say fifteen years time?

If it's a minter, then maybe yes. Generally I think the last of the breed are a safer bet on anything classic. On the '8 the facelift cars just seem like nicer places to be but I suspect HP or similar who have recent experience of stepping straight from one to the other are probably best placed to advise.

The '8 in general I think will always carry a certain price for a really good one as they weren't sold in massive numbers in the first place. the survival rate as a percentage is actually quite good compared to 'regular' cars

Difficult to comment as my old PF was rather more "classy" in many subtle ways, so I haven't noticed any significant improvements, or omissions either.

If it was in overall better condition and I had a garage it would fit in I might have kept it. I think it has a better chance where it is now.

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

After recently spending a long time looking and hunting last month for my A8 its true that the numbers about for sale are getting less.

A lot of scrap out there but genuinly a handfull of good D2s left which is a shame but will make them a rare car.

You tend to find most old cars rust and die, but the Audi being the quality it is should level out in price for the good ones. You see similar with older S Classes and 7 series, the better specification and well kept cars still make good money and more than the early models of the range that replaced them.

I made money on my C4 100 Quattro after 3 years as it really was the only one in the UK for sale. My C4 S6 also lost me no money as again it was a rare beast and being the 20v was sought after.

In my part of the Universe these 8's would be snapped up .... no quibble ...

Converting the Rand to Pound rate they come in at about R 3000 .... At this
price nothing compares in South Africa.

Many years ago the Valiant was a sort after car for Taxi Transport.
Today they are classics that are sought after

My S appreciates in value every year .... insurance premiums increase .
When I Purchased it 2 years ago it was valued at R 130 K .... today it's value is R 150 K ....

I just find it sad that such vehicles tend to be worthless in your parts whereas in
SA they would be worth a fair penny.

Some local examples ...

http://www.autotrader.co.za/used-car.../audi/model/a8

Do the math with the rate exchange .....

I hope so. It does have collector appeal to me. It is the latest, and highest spec PF S8 I've ever seen, or a8parts has ever seen through the doors. It needs a few little bits doing, and I'd like to get a better gearbox in it, but its all maintenance really. I have considered more than once getting the box a full refurb

The RNS-C lives up to my every expectation. Its crap. The 3rd journey I ever did in it, it was still calculating the route 3 miles later. 3 Miles. A mobile phone can do it in 3 seconds these days, but thats just not the point.

You see, If you turned up anywhere in 1998 in a car that had Sat Nav, a TV & Teletext, Quattro, a 340bhp V8, Xenons and a funky solar sunroof. You were going to be making quite an entrance. And that, is the reason I had to have this particular car

A8's are good. S8's are a bit special. And then, some S8's, are just a bit more special again

Cheers Ian, it has/had collector appeal to me too, but I'm not in a position to maintain it.
I always knew it was fairly special when I got it and I've enjoyed owning it immensely; I hope you get a lot of pleasure from it for a long time.
RNS-C nav, yes slow, but I learned to live with it. Once "active" it was pretty good. My wife and I just loved the way it would nag and then sulk before finally giving up and recalculating when it realised you really were NOT going to go where it suggested.

Out of interest have you done anything at all to the gearbox yet, e.g. checking level and topping up? If so, what did you find and how is it behaving at present?
Having paid for a fluid & filter change within the last few months I'm quite interested as it was done at a local garage that I would like to be able to trust with my new steed.

I'm still on the lookout for a D2, and for some reason - I want a PF one. An A8 sport with the RS 2 style steering wheel and a 4 speed box with black leather is where it's at for me. The D4 isn't a patch on the D2, talking relatively. The D2 and D4 sit next to each other on the drive and the D2 looks better, and even feels better inside. The FL is nicer for sure, with the chunky armrests, colour DIS etc... But I have a soft spot for the PF.

Default Rare collectible

The s8s are already appreciating in value.....when I was looking to price mine I had a look and there really wasn't much out there and what there was, wasn't that good in my eyes.

I know long term I ll wish I kept it....but in the short term I need to focus my funds in other areas and that is the harsh reality...opportunity cost.

Keeping an a8/s8 parked and in running condition takes money, time and space and I just don't have that right now.....a couple of weeks ago I spent a whole day first doing things to my vw bora and then the afternoon doing stuff to the s8.....but i m lucky enough to choose the days I work....how many others have that luxury.

Any a8/s8 no matter the condition will one day become a classic if cared for appropriately but how many actually have the time, money and space....that is what it comes down to really.
