Broken down.... EPC & ABS lights, Limp mode?
Well, she let me down on Friday night. First time in 5.5 years of ownership.
Cruising on the motorway 50 miles into a 160mile journey, put my foot down to overtake, and EPC (and ABS) light illuminated immediately, and I lost any real power. Car happy to cruise, but would not accelerate. Revs would flare, but no additional drive to wheels. Is that how limp home mode feels? Pulled over, switched off, lights out again, and OK for a further couple of miles, but then same again. No error codes found by AA on ECU, now towed back to Amersham Audi. They'll have a look tomorrow morning. Car has just had full service, and belts, waterpump, thermostat etc.......a coincindence? So....any ideas? I do have an intermittent ABS sensor problem, but wouldn't expect it to manifest like this. I'm trying not to think the worst.  Ta, Zip

No, this isnt limp mode. It wouldnt have any impact on ABS/ESP light and all gearbox lights illuminate. You'd probably have felt a shunt as it slammed into 3rd, and it would have accelerated very nicely in 3rd at motorway miles.
Its sounds electrical, but odd theres apparently no errors logged. The ABS/ESP controller has control over the engine ECU, and can limit the engine power output, so can the gearbox ECU. They wouldnt in normal operation, but an electrical gremlin maybe could cause it. You havnt mentioned any big bangs, noises, smells or smoke or such horendous things so lets assume the engine is physically ok. Fuel pump would be a good fit, but it still doesnt explain the ABS/ESP lights... It could well be a simple and cheap fix - Dont know how good Amersham is, they probably dont see many D2's these days, but lets hope they have someone good take a look at it

Had just the same a week or so ago. No fault codes, but it went away and didn't come back (yet!). A4 Audi thought perhaps water I the throttle pedal electrical connection

(internal dimming mirror added later)1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. I'm near Hemel Hempstead. Used Amersham Audi a couple of times for servicing when they were Wayside owned. Now bought out by Jardines. Have to say the level of service I received was really excellent.
Ian - yes, engine absolutely fine, running sweet as a nut, no gearbox shunts or anything. Agreed - not sure how much they know about D2s other than from the service manuals. HP - yep, weird. Holds a 60mph cruise @whatever (2.5k?) revs. Go to accelerate, no kick down, very asthmatic almost non-existant response to throttle, flares to 3.5k ish revs, but no discernible acceleration. MAF sensor? Any water ingress likely anywhere? I've not heard back yet. In a 2001 Honda Civic at the moment...... Zip

MAF and throttle body would be my first guesses. Funny that it did not show any fault codes but I guess AA man only has generic fault reader so maybe did not pick them up. VCDS or VAS-PC might show some faults.

Waiting for a call back, but so far been told I need a new throttle pedal (!) and a new "vacuum unit".

throttle position sender failed....£500 odd.
The little vacuum flap rod has failed on the nearside bank as well.....£240 odd. Sound mad? no idea what these might cost. How easy us ut to do the TPS myself...? zip

This rings a bell now...
So, there are 2 independent throttle position sensors within the position sensor I believe, basically so if 1 fails and send s high reading your car doesnt suddenly gallop off. Instead, when the readings differ, ie one is faulty, the throttle goes incredibly conservative, which is what you experienced. I'd definitely be chatting to an independent and putting a call into a8parts before I shell out that sort of brass.... The vacuum flap rod will have been broken for ages. Its not the cause of these issues, or the warning lights. It would be good to get fixed, but you'd be surprised how many owners dont know they're broken on their cars......
