Default starter motor replacement any ideas

Has any one had to change there starter motor ?

4.2 D3 just wandering how much work is involved .? ...every so offen my car won't start .. this is something quite embarrassing and happens when the engine is hot

Mine has started doing the same too. Not sure how big a job it is to do and can't seem to find much online about changing them on D3's.

Looks to be major job, engine needs to be hang from the top using special tools and subframe dropped to access starter.

It has behaved itself for the past week so I may leave it be for now until it gets worse!

Could be your crank position sensor. Same thing happened to mine, it wouldn't start when it was hot.

I don't think it's your starter motor. Check the earth strap from engine to chassis. Clean up both ends with a wire brush and reconnect. I changed both the alternator and starter motor on a D2 with the engine in (traumatizing) be for I used a volt meter at the battery and at the alternator an engine then chassis.

2003 2.8 A8SQ - powder blueish. Fill in for a while. Sold on.
1998 1.8T A4 Avant FWD. Ming Blue (there's a theme here), PEX for the 97 S8.
And a list of non VAG going back 40 years before I saw the light.
