Default An interesting test of......

Auto gearbox, 4WD and ESP. Going steeply uphill as fast as seemed physically possible on a very twisting single-track road.
It was quite odd, as they all kept interacting in very strange ways. The ESP light was on more than off.
SWMBO was "riding shotgun" and looking ahead (well up) for any oncoming vehicles.
Yes, it was the Hardknott pass last week!

Plus the road surface was terrible so I was bouncing all over the place and my right foot was twitching on the loud pedal!

It's 1 in 3 for anyone who hasn't been over and I went up from the West side (Eskdale) then continued over the Wrynose Pass to Langdale, which is quite tame in comparison.

One of the "tamer" sections:

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

The last time I did this road was in an MG Midget a few (many) years back. You must have a lot of fun doing this in an 8!

A bit of reversing on the approach due to morons who have no idea how to drive on single-track roads.
We have plenty of both in my area too so I'm very familiar with them (morons and very narrow roads with passing places).

The electronics kept taking over, but with the amount of power on tap I daren't turn ESP off on the twisty bits as I doubt I had more than 3 wheels firmly on the road that often, so it kept "bogging down". Still a lively ride though!

Last time I did this was about 18 months ago in the wet, and a less capable car (driver?) had managed to ground on the bend shown on your photo (where the rock is..). Slowed me up for a bit...

Did this once with the whole family, complete with roof box, in what passed for 'family' transport at the time - a 1987 Nissan Micra! Was terrifying.....

I wanted to do this when me and the wife was near but had no faith in the 1.9TDI A4 fully loaded with roof box, so gave it a miss.
I had fears of the gearbox going pop and that would have killed the start of the holiday.

Next time in the A8 I think.
