Default Gearbox problem.

Got an issue with my gearbox. I've done a fair bit of searching and although there are a lot of problems reported, I can't see any of them which are similar to mine.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a small judder at low speed, gently accelerating up a small hill which has happened a couple of times since. Finished work tonight and went to put the car in drive. It initially engaged but then lost drive. Gave it a slight rev of the engine and with a thud, it came back in. Exactly the same in reverse and when I got it rolling, at very low speed, there was a fair bit of clunking. Once driving the car was perfect. I've even been back out a few hours later, once the car had cooled back down and it doesn't do it. Plugged it in and no fault codes either.

The car is a 2002 S8 with 161k.

Any ideas?

It does not sound that well to me that's for sure.

Old or low fluid would be my first guess, also a lot cheaper than a gearbox rebuild which could be due at 160k.

I've have had a slight leak from the gearbox - not enough to drip but it does smell and there is some wetness around it. There's a specilist local to me so I'm going to give them a call tomorrow.

Strongly recommend you get it to a ZF gearbox specialist - see sticky at head of this thread. Hope all is well.

There's a place local to me and he seems to know ZF boxes really well. I had my last S8 there for an overhaul and my B10 Aplina (which was a very similar box). I'll sound him out and report back.

Cheers.
