Default Dashboard Squeek

This has now turned into the most annoying fault in the known world!

When driving and on most occasions there is a squeak, its coming from the back of the dash at a point between the Quattro badge and the centre console. Sounds like trim or a part of the dash rubbing on something in the bulkhead area.

Any common problem areas I can look at or do I just empty a can of WD40 down there?

I'd probably use very fine talc rather than WD40.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

There is nothing common....

I had an S8 once that had an annoying rattle that was 'behind the dash' and despite stripping out most of it, got nowhere.

Eventually it turned out to be a loose suspension arm, the noise just travelled that well it sounded like it was coming from the dash.

If you are convinced its behind the dash, I guess you need to start removing bits at a time and going for a drive to see when it dissapears...

I had a classic example on my Focus, a very odd noise from the engine bay that varied with throttle position and speed.
Turned out to be the exhaust, which had moved very slightly, and the rear box was rattling against the rear subframe and moving slightly as the engine moved on its mounts.
The sound was transmitted along the whole length of the exhaust and "appeared" to be coming from the engine bay.
