Because part of the car was paid on a Credit card, The credit card company paid out £10.5k for a new gearbox. Using section 75 of the consumer credit act. In short, if the main card holder makes a transaction (> £100 < £30k), then the credit card company is jointly and severally liable. You have no obligation to even approach the merchant where you made the purchase. A very handy piece of consumer protection.
