Default Quattro in the Snow!

I wonder how folk are getting on in the snow?

I had a fun charge about on very snowy roads this evening up here in the frozen North.

With its wide rubber, I was half expecting the S8 to be a bit pish, but not a bit of it. Romped about in a very sure footed fashion! Blazed it's own trail in the snow on the M8 and even on uncleared minor roads did extremely well. Very sure-footed.

Matbe it's a combo of auto transmission, light weight and new front tyres but hey, I was impressed!

How are the rest of you doing?

'8s in the snow are awesome mate...

Just don't get too carried away though.. braking is still a bit of a lottery on the snow.

M8 was great on Mon morning at 5am.. just trundling past all the ****s in their Focii and repmobiles sitting an inch from each other's bumpers.

Mine's pretty good. I was a couple of hours behind you on the M8 yeaterday, but it was pretty quiet. Worse today. Car handled well even on the totally uncleared Technology Park where I work. But the steeply sloping drive in front of my house beat the '8 last night whan I got home and that's only going to get worse as the snow is compacted

'Fraid I've left mine at home and using my Land Rover as I don't want to damage the '8 and I don't want someone else damaging it either!

My D3 LWB is unstopable in the snow. Love turning the ESP off for a play too

Concur on the braking front....still takes a lot of ABS judder to get my 255 section Pilot PS2s to come to a stop. Corners aren't great either.

Had to laugh a a stupid woman in a gold 330i convertible stuck outside my house this morning going nowhere...with no idea that she shouldn't be trying to drive down my hill with a powerfull RWD car. She stepped out of the car with stilletoes on...

Be careful out there.

from a personal point of view, the 2wd should frankly be no better than any other car.......and in fairness is probably worse, 6 and a half foot wide means there is less room to recover any slips and the autobox means i can't force second to set off. Just got to pootle slow and steady and so far it's behaved itself. Doesn't stop the muppets from sitting up my trumpet, but if one ends up crawlling out of my split 60/40 because they couldn't stop in time i'll be most annoyed.

It's brilliant in the snow- better than my XC90 - the quattro system feels so secure. I have to admit that the clearence could be better - there were a few times when I was scraping along the 'tramlines' where the tractors had been along. By the way, did anyone see the photo in the papers of the BM estate perpendicular to the traffic flow, with a load of annoyed cars queued up behind it? How did he manage that?

Had my ESP light flashing like mad as I drove to work this morning (the outside lane I was using was half ckearish and half covered by 2 inches of snow)

Love when you look in your rear view mirror, all the other cars start to follow you......

Be careful though - the wide tyres and buld can lead to funnies on bends and also brakeing

My S8 is wonderful on the slippery stuff, defies the laws of physics on pullaway with ESP engaged.........

However, I absolutely agree with PsYcHe, the laws of physics (f=Mu x N) certainly apply as with any other vehicle under braking!!!

Turn the ESP off and its an absolute hoot
