As HPsauce says, they are hateful to remove. When I can remove them without a tool, using your photo, (1) I press the whole connector down, followed by (2) pressing the clip at the side in, and then whilst holding it in, (3) pull the connector up. As there is a waterproof seal at the base of the connector, that needs compressed first, to make unclipping it easier.
As to the fabric wrap, that might just be to tidy things up a bit in that area, before they go their respective ways.
