I'd maybe risk a 150 quid on an oil flush, or maybe just top up before getting rid.

Probably not worth oil change but do check level first and top up if necessary.

Does Richie know how to check and top up the oil - there's no dipstick and you need a pump with a flexi arm.
It's prolly covered in the Mechy bits someplace.............. ![]()

Did you rule out the F125 switch? I'd get a proper diagnostic on this if I were you. Aren't you Glagow based? If so, A4 Audi in Clydebank have the full gear and usually don't charge for a diagnostic. IIRC, my F125 switch was specified on the check.

The F125 switch aka the range control switch/multi-function switch is located on the side of the gearbox - it has a mechanical component to it which takes an input from the mechanics of the gearbox and then converts that into an electrical signal to the gearbox ecu to confirm that the mechanical side of the gearbox is doing what the electrical side asks of it. It links to cruise control as well, I seem to recall.
Note there are 2 versions (8 and 10 pin connector) which varies depending on gearbox code The weakest part of it is the connector, hence the advice to try cleaning it up, but it's a bitch to get to. The part itself isn't astronomical (around £150) but it does involve dropping the gearbox down to reach it. Symptoms (aside from logged faults) are limp mode when going from d to r and back again when parking/first started, but otherwise generally good behaviour if you manage to set off on a journey without it going into limp mode. Mine was definitely faulty and haven't had any repeats of issues since changing it. I suspect it is rarely the cause of a fault where the gearbox itself appears to be banging/not changing/slipping as there are all mechanical faults.

Sounds like the normal failure of a bearing and then the O-ring so Clutch pack A gets no oil pressure.
I have a Phaeton W12 atm with the same problem and after having fixed one of these gearboxes in my old S8 (now driving around in another S8) I'm finding it hard to get enthusiastic about pulling the Phaeton gearbox out. It's the same design of gearbox. Does it work properly when the gearbox is stone cold for the first 30 seconds? My S8 did and then failed where as my Phaeton tried to creep forwards in 1 pitifully before going into Limp mode. Yet another 5HP24 that needs work ![]() MG |
