Default D2 BOSE rear parcel shelf speakers question

My D2 BOSE rear parcel shelf speakers always worked as subwoofers. There was no treble or midrange sound ever coming out of them. Only boom-boom-boom kind of sound.

I'm just checking if this is correct ...

Think mine were like that, the main speakers are in the doors.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Thanks HP, so I assume they are bass/subwoofer speakers and not normal speakers.

... I only paid attention to this interesting fact today ...

See thread HERE and Bose PDF HERE - the bass subwoofer effects are mostly carried out through the 2 combined bass reflex door speakers I think

Thanks Neil. Yep, I know about front doors. What really surprised me is that rear parcel shelf speakers are purely bass.

Second link to Bose.co.uk didn't open

Given the rear parcel shelf speaker's size (16.5cm) and the fact that they are not sophisticated dual cone units they can only reproduce low frequencies. The door units are middle range units which re-inforce bass by the use of a bass reflex unit (i.e. an enclosed space which is resonant at low frequencies) which reinforces the bass frequencies projected by the speaker cone as well as projecting some bass through the open ports you can see in the picture. The 3cm high range units are in the top of the door just deal with high freqs.

It would be interesting to find out the cross over frequencies at the amp to see what frequency range they feed each speaker but I did find this:

"Bose does not publish frequency specifications. The reason for this is
that we believe that such statistics do not add very much to an
understanding of an audio product's acoustic characteristics and, even worse,
can be misleading.......
[more waffle]"

You'd almost think he knows what he's talking about!

(And if you ever see the speakers he has in his living room, you'd think so even more! Most of us don't having a living room big enough!)

Now an '8 with full range electrostatics would be fun. The back seats would require removal though!

And approaching the value of a D2 (unless it's the super-special Denim S8)

Think Bose don't want to tell folks their frequency responses as people will realise their gear actually isn't worth what they want for it most of the time..
