I had this on a 2004, turned out to be drivers side rear wheel bearing.
Unless you’ve had a leak from the diff, I’d start looking at the wheel bearings first. After replacing the offending bearing, I ran my D3 for another 100K miles and the other 3 bearings never gave any bother which seems crazy.
