Don't think you will get a decent D3 for £4k, although I haven't ever really looked at them for sale. I am just going to buy Ian's when he sells. 
Honestly, I would buy A8 Pilots car as it is the best pre facelift for sale at a bargain price with the reliable four speed box in desirable sport spec, it will do 30 MPG on petrol, possibly 40 MPG equivalent on LPG. Work out how long it would take for the conversion to pay for itself and if that is for you I suppose.
