RNS-D goes crazy? Says No Changer/Disk

The prior owner of my 2001 S8 put a "reflashed" RNS D unit in this car.
It only has the CD for the California, so here in Idaho, the nav does not work.

And I've noticed that the CD slot does not work at all. It gave me the Nav CD one time, but never again.

And the 6 Disk changer in the trunk plays fine, but does not always talk to the head unit.

At some times, it works fine, showing disk number, track number and even the time on the song.

But then without any warning, just goes crazy, and shows no disk. (Yet it keeps on playing just fine, but I have ZERO control of the CD changer, it's like it's not there anymore, but the music plays on.)

It will even change disks when the CD is over, and start a new disk, and keep on playing, but I have zero control.

Any tips? Thoughts?

The center display is wired up to work, and will show disk and track when the RNS D does, but no disk when it's not.
