The whine appears to be coming from a single corner and only noticeable from 60mph upwards. Below this speed the car is silent, driving round town you don't hear a thing. Only on A roads and motorways do you notice it, more so on the motorway because its quiet a bit louder. I've got used to it and blank it out now.
It sounds like a wheel bearing, I had the one on that side (supposedly) changed although the noise never completely went. I changed the air filter today, with a lot of aggravation en-route. After disconnecting the airbox from the intake pipework (for easy change) I discovered having undone 3 screws that screw number 4 of 5 was badly corroded and proving difficult to undo with a philips screwdriver. Had to use a flatblade to finally get that one undone. Screw number 5 (the one down by the radiator was completely dead. Anyway got the old filter out, and put the new one in. Then struggled for the next 20 mins trying to get the airbox to seal properly, the new filter is a tight fit over the innards. So a quick 20 minute job in total took more than 1hr. Still its done, lets see what if any difference a new filter makes.
