I've never driven a D4 so can't comment on them, but my X5 has the ZF 8HP 8 speed transmission which is probably fundamentaly the same as the one in the D4 and it is a fabulous gearbox.
Both our family cars have been autos since 2006 and there have been a few before this one, all of which I've often switched to manual control especially for more 'spirited' driving. I can honestly say I barely touch the paddles on the X5 though, it's just not necessary, in fact I probably couldn't tell you which gear I am in most of the times, the gear changes, up and down, are almost imperceptible. And you know how some auto boxes have that kind of hesitation when slowing down at roundabouts, then speeding up again? Have never noticed that with this car. If it's as good in the D4, then I'd highly recommend it. |

I've been test-driving a few cars with 8-speed auto boxes recently, though I don't know who makes the boxes, but they've all been extremely smooth with imperceptible changes.

DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant. 2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one! Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later) 1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850! |

Alloys will be 21" however the one current most likly to be the next car already has a brand new set of 2016 S8Plus wheels on it. Hmmm... just clicked the link in your sig... 405mm rotors with 8 pot calipers and all hardware including pads and lines for £1479 "directly from Taiwan". Sounds good value.. too good... but I'm not sure I'd want those on my car... Any real-world reviews or opinions on them?

I'm a bit of an OEM freak, so I think I'd go for the Alcon kit that's standard on the RS6 but can't remortgage the house just yet (), but I'd consider anything if they work and have good real-world reviews. They certainly look the part, but what's QC and material quality like? How long do pads and discs last? What's the corrosion resistance like, what are the spares availability, etc... I know Brembo and AP and others do kits, but are they going to be as good as 420mm RS6 ceramics? Better than the standard 360 or 385mm steels? Sorry .... This is turning into a thread hijacking now...

My conclusion would be that the 'S' petrols are set up for a quicker change, and the 8's and diesels are set more for comfort, which all makes sense. Perhaps the diesels have a significant flywheel effect, and rapid changes are just not possible ? I know the V10 is a very lightweight engine, and changes revs like a motorbike. Its like no other car engine I've ever driven.... The D4 8 speed box is like fluid. You never know its changed. Its weird, its gone through several gears before you even hit 20mph. If you didn't have an indicator the dash, you'd never know

Had a firmware update on the box on My D3 S8 It was done while the fluid was replaced with the newer spec stuff.
It changes gear fine, no noticeable difference from before. One thing Mcakies said though, don't go looking for faster downchanges, you won't get them, its the nature of this gearbox. It changes up OK, but could do with snappier downshifts. I have a 3.0 TDI VW which has an 8 speed DSG box, which is fantastic
