The "snot" like substance is bacterial build up and it is possible that it contains Legionella bacteria so just be careful when blowing it about with an air-line! It will grow in the spray heads particularly because they are heated and bacteria just LOVE the warm conditions which is why they grow in cooling towers and air con units.
