The news is less good on my D2 - the MOT is sorted ok and new washer motor, track rod end and some fettling with the brake wiring to stop an intermittent brake warning light is done, but unbelievably the F125 switch on my gearbox has had to be replaced due to one of the internal components corroding and breaking off, and as this was one of the contacts it meant that the F125 was inhibiting starting of the car and throwing up warnings or not sending correct messages to the auto box, so it has had to be changed

I'm really quite annoyed about this as the box has barely done 25,000 miles from being changed and I'm also told the rear output seal is starting to dribble which means another job to change that shortly too. Is that really acceptable on a box with that low mileage from new? I know it is probably 5 years since changing it but geez surely there has to be some better longevity in a new box from Audi than that? Yours. . . . disgruntled in swindon

I feel your pain after mine failed last year.
Its a cr@pp, flimsy piece of electromechanical equipment which really should have been re-designed/re-engineered a long time ago.
"Made in Spain" it says on the box for my replacement.

On a brand new transmission? that is really bad.
And the leaking rear seal too, I remember on my D2 it kept re-leaking until I got the whole new re-designed flange and new seal, but I sold it not long after that so I don't know how well the new flange held up.

For Cats I can only reccommend HJS cats from Germany, had them for over 3 years on the previous D2 sailed through emissions every time, never corroded. I now have the same cats on the current car too. They are pricey at around £350 per cat, but in this case I think the lifetime warranty is iron-clad (pun intended).
In other words the Germans build so well you won't have to use the warranty

Presumably the new gearbox had the original design flange and seal, in which case the leak is about due. My first D2 had one at 2 years old.

I've gone with C+C Custom Stainless Exhausts nr Glasgow. They have some good recommends and come out at around £525 for the pair in 304/316 grade S/steel - with warranty.

That's a good price, good luck I hope they last a lot longer than the previous ones.
I guess in light of all this factory cats are pretty durable considering they can last up to 15 years or so.

OK , OK So I left the keys to the wrong car with C+C and had to go back later... but may I remind you that took the wrong turning and ended up in the Care Home in Kirkintulloch. Probably the right place for whats increasing looking like "Jack and Victor - on the road".

Amusingly there's a "name that part" thread on another Audi forum and I posted a picture of a new F125. A regular (RS6 driver I think) responded:

Ugh. I never want to see one of those again. Bloody F125.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
