Been a while since I had a D3, but all things being equal sounds about right.
Diesel engines are more thermally efficient than petrol, so much so that they often need an auxiliary heater so you don't have to sit in a cold car for ages in the winter! On the D3, that is diesel fueled and sits on the coolant circuit. In the summer this won't activate, so 12 miles to get "warm" doesn't seem unusual?
