I've never visited f**king but I've seen numerous photos of that sign over the years.

I believe the story goes that the BBC hadn't realised that his popular character, Cupid Stunt, was a spoonerism for something rather offensive. Once they did realise they insisted he change the character or the name. In response he suggested a new character called Mary Hinge, which they agreed was much better.
