In our lane waiting to disembark the p&o Calais ferry. The lane to our right has emptied except for the last vehicle, a camper van. He's in some sort of hurry and is doing 20mph plus and is ignoring the deck steward's waves and shouts to stop. He flinches by one of the ship's ribs as his mirror approaches and scrapes along the side of our barge. Goodbye door mirror and mech, gouge along door and wing, gouge across alloy wheel and he finally realises what he is doing when he comes to a halt with his rear full width tow bracket in front of my wheel and the bumper pulled off and all the washer fluid on the deck. With a car of this age, he's written it off. It now seems his insurance is some sort of trader insurance, and as of today he has not reported it. Did he rent it and can't drive it? Is it even his?

oh dammit thats terrible news
 surely the ferry stewards aren also jointly liable as they were "marshalling and instructing him" at the time? I would press your insurance to attack both routes I think . . .

Thanks - useful reply. The crew were as amazed as we were and we have an "accompanied vehicle damage" report completed by an officer and with a crew member as witness. As we're third party only our company doesn't care much but they are not being obstructive at least.

Was this on Calais side? Just wondering as its a requirement to report an accident to the police if it happens in uk. Where was camper registered?
Have you got legal cover with breakdown etc that might be useful for applying some pressure?

If you have his details just set a solicitor on him after you have decided on a settlement figure. Once he gets a solicitors letter with the added solicitors fees mounting the longer he takes to react he'll inform his insurers. If he has non report it to the police as an unisured driver!

Thanks again. Camper UK registered. Ferry docked at Calais but as its a UK vessel perhaps a ship's officer counts as police? He's doubtless on his way to sunny Spain but we have at least had the go ahead from his(?) insurers to effect temporary repairs and continue our journey. Like the solicitor idea and will pursue when we return to the UK.

At least you've managed to get the bugger... Had something similar when leaving ferry at Le Havre in my D2, except this was French registered.. UK driver. and their insureance couldn't track the truck
