Had another poke and the screen has came back to life, so possibly as Architex says.

Mine had exactly the same! If you press it, the MMI screen cycles between a few input channels. It just means that your car has TV/Freeview pre-wiring. If you do get Freeview fitted, it would work by pressing this button to cycle between the Freeview and back to the MMI, I believe Pete said!
I used to keep an LED torch in that compartment and accidentally knocked the button once and panicked thinking I'd broken the MMI system somehow.

This looks to be an aftermarket job, definitely not OEM to my mind. Switches between what seems to be 4 inputs, MMI and 3 others. Looks a little like this:
http://car-solutions.com/nfs/product...terface_en.pdf The Control head is reporting that CP is active, so not sure if that's responsible for the periodic cutouts or of the switching system is faulty. Scans are attached, most seem to be 'normal' D3 errors, but an interesting one from the engine. Before and after scans attached.
