Default RNS-D - won't unlock using its Security Code

i bought a used RNS-D unit which was taken off a 2001 S8, it came with the Security Code, it is in a very good condition, all good, up until i hooked it up, as it doesn't unlock when the Security Code is typed in.

Initially i thought that maybe the seller being a scrapper mixed up the Code with another unit, so i double checked and Audi has confirmed the code he sent me.

Does anyone have any idea why does it do it?

I've tried coding it, even though it was already properly coded coming from an S8, i did it anyway but with no results.

I am kind of stuck at the moment and any idea would be appreciated....

L.E. - the error code i get on the display is now: SAFE PIN NOT CONNECTED.

thanks Delboy, i was reading that thread and went down in the garage to check pin 5 and it looks like that is my issue as well...mine is a Japanese spec, so the original Sat Nav has on pin 5 the Ant Rem Out(whatever that is as i have no antenna), so i guess it is not powered up continuously.

I will tap pin 7 and bridge a wire to pin 5 and i guess it should do the trick...

alright then, made the bridge between pin 5 and 7 and all good now, unit is unlocked and working.

Now another issue, i have no info on the DIS from the unit, i've checked the coding and it's alright, could it be because i have the headlights height adjustment error?

it was the same with the old unit, all i got on DIS was the error....

I don't get any info on my DIS either, but I put that down to having a faulty instrument cluster, as I sometimes get communication errors in VCDS. Would be interested in where you check the coding, and what it should be.

i checked the coding in vcds and out of my mind is 00117, if i remember well...i've just remembered now that i should also check the coding of the Navigation...will get back tmrw with some updates.

so your DIS is simply black, showing nothing?

Code 00117 would be quite common up to MY01. Later versions can be a bit different.

I added an RNS-D to my old D2.

You will not get any info from the DIS without additional coding, wiring and the addition of a TMC module.

The RNS-D talks a different protocol that the DIS does not understand, the TMC module converts between the two protocols and allows the DIS to work.

Wiring in the TMC module is quiet involved as you have to splice into the wiring behind the instrument cluster.

The attached guide will help you through adding a TMC. The guide is for an A6 but the procedure is basically the same although some steps are not needed at all.

Have a look at the thread from I did the install a few years ago.

Cheers for that Manny. At least it explains why I don't have anything on mine... and not a job I'm likely to attempt.

that makes sense, however my car came from factory with a Sat Nav system, albeit for the Japanese market, so o i guess the DIS should've been enabled and the coding on the previous unit was also DIS enabled...

where is the TMC unit located? will check if it is physically on the car.
