Default Poly-V belt tensioner

My car stopped on the M-way with, I think, charging issues. Wife driving so not exactly sure.

Car was dragged off the motorway, and the garage said it was a unserviceable belt tensioner. 5 hours to change it, as the whole front of the car needs to come off.

Is this correct???

The car is back on the road now, and the bill paid, but I don't think they had the front of the car off...

Quite likely, it's one of those "while we are in there" jobs that get done (mine was) while changing the cam belt. Along with a fair few other things.

Not sure about 5 hours though, I don't think my whole cambelt job had that much labour in it. I guess it depends how familiar with the car they are and how cautious as a result.

Interesting....it just recently had a timing belt change at A for Audi in Glasgow.

I'm wondering if they normally change the tensioner on the serpentine belt or not?

It's a FL S8. An early one. Does the front need to come off for this job on one of these????

Don't get me wrong. The bill was less than I was expecting. But wondering if they really fixed the problem...

I would expect knowledgeable independents to suggest doing all the "extras" but not Audi.
AFAIK the front comes off on all D2's for a cambelt, certainly 4.2's.

It doesn't seem to be anything that bothers the garages, just standard procedure and it's all designed to be done that way.

HP.
Yes, the front must come off for a cam belt- but does it need to come off for a serpentine belt tensioner?

I'm sure Conan will know!

Front does not need to come off, at least not for 32V V8. I have changed belts twice on mine and 2 other cars.

Poly v-belt tensioner damper removal+installing is rated 0.7 hrs by Audi for V8 petrol engines.

Thanks ainarssems.

That explains the low bill if they managed to do the work without taking the front orff.

I've had the V-belt off on the FL without taking anything else off, its a fiddly job but can be done. I imagine changing the tensioner would be harder but also doable on FL as well.
I'm sure there are instructions on Audipages and quattroworld how to do it, and I believe you can skip the viscous fan removal step too, just manouver the belt around and over the fan blades.
