Default Wanted: VCDS - where to buy?

Okay so done a fair bit of reading.. decided its high time I bought one of these.

So I can buy one from Ross Tech or Gangam style.. oops I mean Gendan.co.uk and the price is pretty much the same so makes sense to buy from Gendan, who from what I can tell are the UK's official reseller?

Question is, can you buy the real mcCoy from anywhere else? has any one got one for sale even?

what happens if you buy a genuine second hand one? do you still get the support or is that for the first year only?

thanks in advance

Bought my one from them, no bad things to say.

Would sell you my cable if the mobile edition was available for sale in uk but alas its not here yet.

There is a free edition of the software that can be used with generic cables but the functionality is limited and dare i say it one day you would need the full blown edition.

Thanks for the reply Del (btw is there just you and me on this forum or what? )

I've read a few stories about non-genuine cables, so I won't go there, especially after my recent bill of £1100 for a brake calliper and nearly the same for the pump if it had gone back to the indies/dealers.

Was just looking on ebay and some people with 100 per cent positive feedback have got their genuine cable for sale, question begs; is it worth a punt buying a 'used once' or is it better to get it directly from the reseller?

is the registration transferrable?

I want to get one now, since I need to be able to rescan after fixing the compressor, and also would like to check the other problem I was getting which has caused the EML to come on.. something to do with the manifold flaps and the plastic arms that control them..

There is other users on the forum

Guess they have more interesting partners at home

As for the cable, if it were me, I would have put the order in already, I bought mine the day after I bought the 8.

Its the best investment you will make trust me.

In the genuine cables licence information is integrated in the cable so you do not need to worry about transferring to new owner. Second hand cables on e-bay are not much cheaper then new ones. If you have to pay £260 for a new or £240 for second hand surely it's better to go for a new cable. On the other hand if you want to resell your cable in the future you can be sure you can get most of your money back.

What will cost (if its a second hand, genuine cable) is to re-register with RossTech for continued support if you want that. (£50). The Rosstech site explains about that.

The up-to-date Rosstech fully functional software is available as a free download from their site.

Thanks guys

well it's good to know that the licence is linked to the cable. I guess I need to find out what the continued support gets you? IE is it technical support if your cable stops working or is it support on how to trouble shoot issues with your car? (if that makes sense).

As for the price, deffo - they seem to hold their value! I looked at 'completed listings' and some people even seemed to have paid more for a used one than a new one!

I also worked out the cost of getting it shipped direct from Ross Tech, and it would appear that the local stockist is more competitive.

Do any of you manage to charge (non-members) for work done, and hence make back some of what you've paid for your cables? ... I recall a few years back I had a MK4 Golf and paid a guy £20 for doing a few things to the car such as: full closure windows, alarm beep, miles to empty on the trip computer, unlock driver's door on one press, all doors on two etc.
