Just thinking here ,do you need to change the coding for Aux heater to show in the mmi screen , do a full scan with vcds and see if aux heater pulls up in the scan results .
On the 4.2 tdi the exhaust of the aux heater sticks out through the under tray just in front of the drivers side front wheel , is it the same for 3L tdi I'm not sure ??

Search on interweb for thread on a8 called definitive guide to auxillary heater or summat like that , it tells you everything about how to do it
I'm not sure if all 3L have it some one on here may know .

Thanks for the info Mech, will have look for that heater exhaust in the morning. In my case I'm starting the engine fully and then locking car when I'm outside, so I dont think it is related to the aux heater.

Aux heating wasn't available as an option after 2006 if I remember correctly.

Yes i could see what your trying to acheive starting up then locking it from outside up , was going at the aux heater as another way to get it demisted and warm if you could not sort the locking side out .

Like Conquistador says aux heater may not be there , just a thought when its running can you lock yourself in the car with the locking button on the door near the inner handle .

Zahg, your coding on both cars is the same and is also the same as mine so don't think it's that. Maybe it is an adaptation channel - but sadly these are not well documented.

I have Aux heater but had to do some VCDS work for it to appear on the MMI and with timers. There was also an adaptation to add another line for engine pre-heat. The pre-heat function is not working as it requires a diverter valve.
There is also an additional pump required on the heater for full functionality, but I found an adaptaion to make the residual heat pump run that is on the heater matrix, and they do indeed blow warm air after 5 minutes, but I think it is heating the whole engine rather than just the heater matrixes so never gets very warm.

I fitted the additional pump on mine Snap the one on the aux heater , mine does not have the diverter valve but it works a treat .... a 15 min run gets it warm if i let it run for 30 mins its really toasty inside , ,had no problems with battery going low or anything , but i did fit a good over spec bosch battery to it to give it a chance .

Perhaps pumping the water from close to the aux heater just works that bit better than running the resisdual heat pump ??

Superb mod well recomend it , not expensive either just the pump and a couple of pipes ,bout £100 for the parts iirc and your time
