Default MOT at Audi

To be honest I wouldnt even dream of going to Audi for an MOT even if it was free....my cousin recently took his 05 A4 to a local audi dealer for the coil pack recall...they offered to do a visual inspection while it was there....came back with a £3000 estimate!!!!!...including something like £1000 for work on brakes

So unless like playing russian roulette I would find a friendly MOT place with people you can trust....

I want my friendly MOT place to do an MOT though, friendly means overlooking the cats or emissions. Look at these tyres I found on my car a few days after it passed its MOT. One of the advisories was 'brake pads wearing thin' so I decided to change the brakes myself, when I took the tyres off. I nearly crapped myself (bare in mind I am off to Germany in a few weeks in this near 200MPH/2 Ton thing) so I was furious to see this. Needless to say, I replaced the tyres straight away. I don't know any friendly MOT testers, but god knows what you'd call this one.

How often do you check your tyres Amar?? geez I agree with you that it should never have passed even the most friendly of MOT's but you have to take some responsibility for checking your tyres at least every week if not more often especially with a "high performance tyre shredding car"!!

Oh and congratulations on your 3,000th post!!!

Having been here myself (though not through MOT), from 'needing done soon' to canvas can happen pretty quickly.

Neil - I've not been driving as many years as most of you so lack the experience that you guys have attained in your years of motoring, in all honestly I never even thought of checking 'down there' and because my car is so low it is difficult to inspect the tyres, I can just about get my finger in to keep a track of the tread. The alignment was done before I collected it by Wheels In Motion (highly recommended) and the suspension is spot on, I read on the RS6 forum afterwards that the Bridgestones that were on it have a knack for doing this on the RS6s so now have Goodyear Eagle F1s, which I will now keep an eye on.
I didn't spot it were my 3,000th post. What do I win? I could do with a rear parking sensor for my RS6 please A8 Parts!

If the Goodyear F1's are the Asymmetric V1 then I would strongly recommend keeping an eye on them. I used to use GDS3s and they were brilliant, when Goodyear changed them to the Asymmetric I put some on the rear of my Soarer and went from getting 12,000 miles from the rears to 4,500 miles. They may be a little grippier, but they died a misserable death on my car. I am told the V2 that has just come out improves this, but I haven't tried them. I sold the car just before they needed replacing. The GDS3's on the front were still going strong.

Yup, you could make it from just legal to that in a few days quite easily in that car, so it could well have legally passed, but it should definitely been marked as an advisory.....

A few more miles on that tyre and it would have blown.

I've been using the same MOT station for over 26 years, friendly yes, helpful yes, local no, discount MOTs no.

Would he let me off with anything, definitely not, and that's the reason I use him. I know the car is MOT's properly and it has a clean bill of health for another year. In the 26 years I have had one advisory and no fails.

I can have an MOT done a mile from my home for £9.99 which is a great deal, or is it? The test should, according to the DVLA take approximately one hour, a mechanic's wages are more than £9.99 per hour plus the cost of the MOT equipment, rates, gas, electricity, tax, etc. etc. So how can they charge such a small amount and make a profit

Much the same here.. Use a garage down the road, they're not interested in big jobs, so doesn't suit them to lie about MOT, and they know I do most of the little stuff myself, or take it to a specialist, so nothing much for them apart from the odd little thing I don't have the tool for (yet).
