Just confirmed that it's the fuel pump.
I managed to get some life from it by hard wiring the feed, checking that the pump had that same feed at the pump connector and then hitting the pump resulted in some noises and enough pressure to start the engine. MG

Reseating wsa a worry for me too but the twice I pulled it it reseated no problems. Just carry a can of fuel and beaware around 1/4 tank you could have a moment
 I found alot of the seals were huge when I stripped mine down. A couple of days drying out and they were back to where the should be. I'm guessing the rubber absorbes petrold and makes em grow Strangly Audi don't sell the pump only but only sell a complete seal kit for changing the pump only and complete refurbishment of thge pump assembly. You can't get individual seals which is a bit annoying and expensive.
