I'm going to feel rather stupid after this post but I'd like to know the right way of it......
As I mentioned earlier in this post I had previously purchased a set of 245x35x20 Michelin Pilot Sports for a set of 8.5J FE alloys I was trying to buy. Before I bought the tyres I had a look on here and one of the first posts I came across was a couple of guys that had the staggered set up..... i.e./ 8.5J's on the front and 9J's on the rear. The tyres they run were 245x35 on the front and 275x30 on the rear hence why I bought the 245's as I was going to buy 8.5J alloys. Having read more posts since it seems like Ive got it terribly wrong. 255x35x20 seems to be the right size for 8.5J alloys. Why do some on here run two different sizes on 8.5J rims ? Will my 245's be ok or should I try and sell them and buy the proper 255's ? Feel really stupid asking this but again need to know the right way of it ........ Thx ! |

They will be fine not much difference in 245 and 255

Sergey you are such a perfectionist....
Considering how many miles I do...I chew through tyres within 6-8 months...personally the most cost effective I found for FE 20's was 275 35 20 pirrellis....yes they don't last as long as michellins but for the price of them I found them good value in comparison...but I have I say the conti 3s are definitely a superior tyre and would be my choice if I was doing below average mileage.

Hi Ranj, great to hear from you after our trip.
The only issue of pirelli is lack of rim protection. At least in my tyre size.

I never really considered that...I would just go for a wider tyre.

I don't understand rim protectors on our cars. A new tyre on my RS6 is £250, to refurbish an alloy it is £50-60. I'd rather the alloy got damaged than the tyre, for what it's worth, I'm currently running Goodyear Eagle F1 Assys, I'm going to order four new Michelin Pilot Super Sports next month, not cheap, they come in at about £1,100ish for 255/35/19s, but the grip is supposed to be phenomenal.

Rim protector gives you a couple of mm for rubbing against kerbs. That's really it.
If anything, I'm wondering if the reason I've had two sidewalls go from potholes on the 20's is from the super wide sidewall compressing against the rim.

![]() - admittedly, the new PS3s are only on the front wheels, but I was a bit taken aback. Maybe I should be a bit more careful, maybe there was some diesel on the bend, rather than it being the fault of the tyres though. |
