That's good, very good (comparatively) if it was a new box quote. Might give them a try...

Mine was a 5 HP 19 FLA for the 3.7

But im not sure if theres another code for the later sport mode gearbox

Mine was an 01V gearbox on the sticker but looking at THIS there are at least 5 codes
Ahh - in that case, I'm guessing that it is 5HP24FL (but I'm getting that from the Chester Auto Transmission website, not the code sticker, which doesn't seem to have anything similar??). Don't know about a different code for the sport 'box tho'..

It was a refurb box. And 4.2s were 5HP24 units, though there are a variant or 10 out there.

Sport boxes are the same AFAIK, it's just the TCU that's different as paul @ audipages did the TCU swap on his US S8.

Interestingly I met my old mate this evening who was/is (still vaguely) "in the business" and asked him his opinion of what to do when the gearbox gives up on an old A8:
1. Scrap
2. Exchange box for a "rebuilt" one with 2-year (or whatever) g'tee.
3. Get someone competent to take it out and apart and replace the appropriate parts showing wear/damage.

3. No contest.

He reckoned ZF boxes like the A8 has are largely robust and last "forever" and that once you've found and fixed what's broke, and replaced any other parts that wear out you're sorted for a long time at a bargain price (relatively speaking).

I also asked him, if it's still largely OK but has the odd "twitch" do I get it looked at now or wait till it's more serious. A: Wait, it won't cost much more.

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

ZF online catalogue has 3 gearboxes (all 5HP 24A):

1. Part No. ZF 1058 020 013 Engine Code : BCS, AQH
Transmission ID : ECY (1058 020 013)
S8 Quattro 265kW 99-02, Audi 01L 300 041S

2. Part No. ZF 1058 020 022 Engine Code : AYS, AVP
Transmission ID : FBG (1058 020 022)
4.2 Quattro 228kW 98-02
S8 Quattro 265kW 99-02
[No Audi code given]

3. Part No. ZF 1058 020 030 Engine Code : AYS, AVP
Transmission ID : FBG (1058 020 030)
4.2 Quattro 228kW 98-02
S8 Quattro 265kW 99-02
Audi 01L 300 042P

Not sure what the difference is between 2 and 3 which have the same engine codes and models but have adifferent ZF part No.

It'll be the same fundamental box, but with some tweaks, possibly because of early life failures, new parts available, etc.

3. Part No. ZF 1058 020 030 Engine Code : AYS, AVP
Transmission ID : FBG (1058 020 030)
4.2 Quattro 228kW 98-02
S8 Quattro 265kW 99-02
Audi 01L 300 042P

265KW (Engine output, I think), A5 (I think this may the gearbox code), 03/02 (year of manufacture)

AVP (Engine code?), EUU FBG (gearbox code?)

Other codes are optional equipment and the rest of the build codes...

Brian - thanks for the link to the Mackie's quotes: it's another option, and get's me north of the border - always a good thing - even if it's on a low loader

Amanda - thanks for the info on when yours was done, appreciated.
FBG is the same gearbox code as my late 2002 FE and the Audi part number (which bares no relation to the ZF part number, but can be cross referenced using ZF USA web site info) was 01L 300 042P - this part number was for a brand new gearbox and was dropped in August 2006. The replacement part number is 01L 300 042PX - where X = reconditioned.

The current(ish) price from Audi is £4520! My price lists are a bit out of date but I'm guessing it won't have got cheaper. Am sure that's quite a bit more than the last time I looked up the price.....

Looked at a couple of other gearbox part numbers and the price is the same whichever you select.

I would certainly recommend calling ZF directly for a price - after all Audi will most likely farm out refurbishment to them anyway so you just cut out the middle man! I suspect the repair and refurb of your existing box will be by far the cheapest/most cost effective option so long as you can live without the car while the box is in bits.

I suspect the replacement box from Audi option best suits those who need the car mobile again ASAP.

Adrian

Cheers all - £4446.46 is the quoted price from Audi, I'm mostly offline for the next 4/5 days (wot wiv' Christmas, and the kids having just landed home ), but all of this is really helpful.

I'll probably pick up what to do in earnest either 27th/28th or 3rd January. In the meantime, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all - and to those at the meet in Stoke, have a good one!
