Yes, I can adjust the fan speed manually, and no, the fan speed didn't change unless I did. So I tend to agree that that rules out a flap.
Anyway, further developments. We have had a slow leak somewhere in the engine coolant system. Last weekend the red thermometer appeared on the dash. I topped the coolant up and limped the car home. It's now at the garage, who've reported a leaking coolant pump. They also think that the lack of hot air could be related (they suggested an airlock somewhere) such that getting the engine coolant working might clear the AC/heating problem. I confess that I find this difficult to follow or understand.
Oh, and since it's almost due the cambelt service at 75000/80000/whatever miles, they've suggested that's rolled in too. It's all got a bit expensive all of a sudden. Expensive as in more than the value of the car expensive...
