Not entirely clear if that's because of the difference in construction having a dynamic effect on rolling radius that's enough to cause problems, or just because the handling might feel a bit strange. Person I spoke to wasn't really able to justify reasons to my satisfaction.

Ho hum
Sounds like tosh to me...especially given the lack of a logical explanation. If it helps, I've been running with a pair of Super Sports (front) with PS2's (rear) for both this summer (since June, I think) and last autumn before i swapped onto my 18" winter wheels. They've probably done around £5k miles, with no adverse effects - though they are, of course, performing better than the previous PS2's that I had on the front before.

They are probably just covering their @sses. If they told it's fine it would be just matter of time until somebody crashed, got 'experts' conclusion that accident was caused by different level of grip between tyres and sued them be it individual, insurance company or corporation. That could be very costly for them so it's safer just to tell not to mix tyres.

Very true - if the bloke had said to me that grip level will be quite different so may effect handling balance I'd be happy to take them at their word. It's not like I drive the car to the limits of its grip in any case!

Apparently the 20s are on back order from France so been advised to order early otherwise I may be waiting a very long time for them. Will see if it passes MOT in a couple of weeks and decide then if I need to get rhem ordered. May find myself off the road for a few weeks if it fails on tyres!
